Federal law requires that you must have a Coast Guard-approved, wearable PFD in good and serviceable condition, and of an appropriate size for each person onboard your vessel. 

Boats longer than 16 feet must carry a Coast Guard-approved throwable device (Type IV).  A throwable device is not required on canoes or kayaks regardless of length.  For more information on exemptions and the proper use of life jackets, read the Boaters Guide to Federal Requirements for Recreational Boats

The US Coast Guard recommends everyone always wear a PFD on a vessel that is underway.

Children under 13 years of age must wear an appropriate U.S. Coast Guard-approved wearable PFD on a vessel that is underway, unless below deck or within an enclosed cabin.

If a state has established a child life jacket wear requirement that differs from the Coast Guard requirement, then the state requirement will be applicable on waters subject to that state's jurisdiction. Contact the state boating authority where you are operating for more information.

Every year, at the beginning of the season, check the buckles are functioning properly and that the buoyancy of each PFD remains effective.  

PFDs do not have an expiration date.  All PFDs should be tested for wear and buoyancy at least once a year. If a PFD is damaged, waterlogged, smells like mildew, faded, or otherwise damaged, it should not be used and should be discarded.
